Over a dozen Kane County Forest Preserves and a half-dozen distinct watersheds bear witness to the past existence of an immense body of water. 14,000 y.o. Glacial Lake Pingree extended south to north from Lily Lake to Crystal Lake and east to west from Randall Road to Route 47.
Many of our local streams still spring from the bed that was Glacial Lake Pingree and even now evidence of the lake’s rich bottomlands, islands, and shorelines can be easily detected.
The Glacial Lake Pingree Circle Tour goes through numerous forest preserves exploring the remnants of this primal lake. Once you learn about Glacial Lake Pingree, you will “see” it everywhere!
It looks like a donut.
